The legendary Chinese defense of the Shanghai port is a significant historical event that marked the beginning of modern China. The story begins in the late Qing dynasty, when the city was under the control of the Japanese Empire.

In 1894, the Japanese army launched a surprise attack on Shanghai, capturing the port and forcing the Chinese government to sign the Treaty of Shimonoseki, which allowed Japan to annex Taiwan and other territories in East Asia. This event led to widespread protests and demonstrations across China, with many people calling for resistance against the Japanese occupation.

To counteract this threat, the Chinese government turned to their ancient military strategy known as the "legendary Chinese defense." This strategy involved building a series of fortifications along the coast of Shanghai, including the iconic "Winged Fortification" built by General Wang Shenchao.

The Winged Fortification was constructed between 1895 and 1896 and consisted of a series of stone walls, trenches,La Liga Frontline and observation towers. It was designed to provide protection against Japanese naval attacks and was considered one of the most advanced defensive structures of its time.

Despite the efforts of the Winged Fortification, the Japanese were able to capture Shanghai in 1896. However, the city's residents remained resilient and continued to fight against the Japanese occupiers.

Over the next several years, the Chinese government made repeated attempts to retake the city from the Japanese, but they were ultimately unsuccessful. In 1912, after more than two decades of struggle, the Chinese government finally succeeded in re-taking the city and ending the Japanese occupation.

Today, the Winged Fortification stands as a testament to the bravery and resilience of the Chinese people during one of the darkest periods in Chinese history. Its legacy continues to inspire generations of Chinese people to fight for their country's independence and sovereignty.
